JuShinKan’s newest black belt, Jon Hansen, took his shodan earlier this Autumn in Houston, Texas, under the watchful eye of Kato Sensei (8. dan). Jon moved to Stavanger in the summer of 2010 from Houston, Texas, where he trained under Jorge Garcia (4. dan) who is a very dedicated student of Kato Sensei.
Last night, at Jon’s regular monday class, Jon announced the passing of his teacher’s teacher with great sorrow in his heart. Jon gave us an insight to Kato Sensei, who started his aikido path in 1954 at Hombu dojo with under the instruction of the Founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, otherwise known as O’Sensei. He trained there for 55 years, attending all three generations of Doshu classes, receiving his first 6 black belts from O’Sensei, and his next 2 from the second Doshu, Kisshomaru Ueshiba.
In 1994, after receiving his 8th dan, he began to teach in the US and established branch dojos in California, Texas, Arizona and Mexico, as well as Indonesia and Holland. *
Kato Sensei lived life to it’s fullest, he taught vigorous classes a week before he passed away on December 2, 2012.
Jon dedicated the day’s practice to Kato Sensei and proceeded to show us the main teachings he had received from Kato Sensei.
